Pro Tip: Knowing which piano you’re up against makes planning your removal strategy a lot easier. Even among so-called “upright” or “grand” categories, you’ll find variations in size, weight distribution, and fragility. The more you know, the better you can protect your back—and your customer’s prized instrument.

By knowing exactly what kind of piano you’re dealing with—be it an upright in a cramped city apartment or a grand in a sprawling suburban home—you can prepare the right dolly, straps, and crew size. You’ll also know whether you can keep the piano fully intact (our Grunber preference) or if partial disassembly is unavoidable. Above all, communicate with the customer about space constraints and let them know if you need extra help or a different approach.
Remember: A well-informed hauler is a safer hauler—and a better steward of someone’s cherished instrument.

When a piano reaches the end of its stay at a client’s property, your job doesn’t stop at hauling it away. You also need a plan that aligns with Grunber’s commitment to eco-friendliness and your client’s expectations.
Remember: not all pianos are created equal—some can still sing a few more tunes elsewhere, while others might be bound for parts or a landfill. Below are your top options, along with a few key “Do’s and Don’ts” to keep in mind.
If the piano’s still in decent shape—and can actually hold a tune—find it a new place to shine.

Don’ts
Do’s:
A: In most cases, no. If the hallways or doorframes are especially tight, you might have to remove them. But whenever possible, we prefer keeping the piano intact to reduce disassembly risks.
A: While two strong haulers can sometimes manage an upright, having a third or fourth helper increases safety and cuts down on strain, especially if stairs are involved.
A: Before forcing it, measure every angle. Sometimes partial tilting or momentarily removing a door hinge is all it takes. Worst case, you may need to remove legs or pedals to squeeze through safely.
A: If it’s beyond repair or a health risk, recommend disposal at a recycling center or landfill (following local regulations). Wear protective gear—mold, rusty strings, or rotten wood can pose hazards.
